His Girl Friday is based on the Front Page, which is a Broadway comedy play by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur.
The play was first produced in 1928, opening at the Times Square Theater in New York. It ran for 278 performances until 1929. It has since been restaged four more times.
The film was released 12 years after the show first opened. Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell played the roles of Walter and Hildy in the film. The roles are represented slightly differently in the original play.
