Why Is Mickey's Dog Named Pluto? | Disney FAQ

Pluto is a Disney dog generally attributed to Mickey Mouse.

He first appeared as a nameless character in the 1930 cartoon the Chain Gang. He was then named Rover, when he appeared as Minnie Mouse’s dog in the 1930 cartoon the Picnic.

Finally, the dog was renamed Pluto in the 1931 cartoon the Moose Hunt. He is now Mickey Mouse’s dog.

As the then-planet Pluto was discovered in 1930, it is reported that Mickey’s dog Pluto was named after the planet.

Pluto the dog has appeared in over 100 Disney and Mickey Mouse cartoons, as well as numerous feature-films and TV shows.
